"I was going on a train from Manchester to London and I was looking out of the window at some cows, I believe, and I just thought: “Boy doesn’t know he’s a wizard - goes off to wizard school.” I have no idea where it came from. I think the idea was floating along the train and looking for someone and my mind was vacant enough so it decided to zoom in there."

It’s a sad day in the Queen City. At the crossroads of Central Ave., 10th St and Louise Ave. as you are leaving Plaza Midwood, gated off, set for demolition, sit a 100 year old apartment building, a 100 year old home, a row of shops (shown here,) including Reflection Sound Studios, and the event venue, Grand Central. These buildings will replaced by new condos or apartments. It’s a sign of progress, as that intersection has largely remained underutilized, far longer than the decade I have lived here…but it also, unbeknownst to a lot of people, takes out a huge chunk of Charlotte’s musical history with it.
It seems a lot of people, even residents of the neighborhood, didn’t know about the presence of Reflection Sound Studios, let alone the studio’s historical significance and impact on the music industry over the last 45 years. The studio, which sits at the far end of the building, is where R.E.M. recorded their first two albums, “Murmur” and “Reckoning” and, where in 2003, Brand New recorded what is arguably their most well known album, “Deja Entendu”. Other artists who’ve recorded there include Whitney Houston, James Brown, Joe Walsh, Fantasia, B.O.B., Hootie and The Blowfish, Everclear, Ben Folds Five, Aerosmith, The Dixie Chicks and a LONG list of many other incredibly talented musical acts over the last 4.5 decades.
Felt like I couldn’t watch this happen without at least mentioning it. It’s sad, but history isn’t very well preserved in this city. Charlotte has grown so quickly, that the solution always seems to be to tear it down and build again, which is a tragic way to address growth, by erasing the history that has made us who we are… http://ift.tt/1puEorX
